Hilton Head Island, South Carolina (December 5, 2010/2:00 AM) - The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting incident that occurred at approximately 7:50pm on December 4, 2010 in the roadway near 50 Farmer’s Club Drive.
Numerous eyewitnesses revealed that during a confrontation, Gary Lee Simmons (51 years of age) of 7 Huggins Hollow in Bluffton fired at least two shots from a rifle, fatally wounding Alvin Sosa (30 years of age) of 1106 Bluffton House Apartments. Events leading up to the shooting are still under investigation.
Simmons was present and arrested at the scene and charged with voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm during commission of a violent crime. Additional charges may follow.
Coroner Edward Allen responded to the scene and authorized a forensic autopsy of Sosa to be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina.
